Thousands To Benefit From Cold Weather Payment

Around 15,500 people in Northern Ireland are to benefit from a Cold Weather Payment, it has been confirmed.

A Cold Weather Payment is triggered by information supplied by the Met Office from its weather stations. It is paid when the average temperature is recorded or forecast to be zero degrees Celsius, or below, for a period of seven consecutive days.

In this instance, the weather station in Katesbridge forecast average temperatures below zero between 16 and 22 January.

It is understood qualifying claimants in postcodes BT24-26 and BT30-34 will automatically receive a £25 payment on Wednesday 4 February or Monday 9 February.

Social Development Minister Mervyn Storey said: "These Cold Weather Payments will come as welcome support for people living across Northern Ireland who have needed help to heat their homes during the recent cold snap."
