Tuffers tells adults not to get stumped by their Gremlins

Former cricketer and celebrity 'King of the Jungle' Phil Tufnell marked the arrival of the new 'Get On' campaign TV adverts today by wrestling with his own Gremlin, played by Harry 'Potter' and 'Willow' star Warwick Davis, at the Oval cricket ground in London.

The latest celebrity supporter to join the campaign, Phil urged the millions of adults across the country who have difficulties with reading, writing and maths to get rid of their Gremlins.

He said: "When I was growing up all I thought about was cricket, so it's fair to say I wasn't too hot at things like spelling. But just because you missed out on a chance to learn first time around, doesn't mean you can't go back into learning and knock your own Gremlins for six!

"Brushing up your reading, writing and maths skills can make a real difference to your everyday life - there's no excuse for not giving it a try! If you're sick of getting stumped, why not give 0800 100 900 a call?"

The latest figures available show that, since the Get On campaign was launched in August 2001, around 320,000 people have gained a reading, writing or maths qualification, and millions more have joined courses to start brushing up on their skills.

The next phase of the campaign begins today, and will feature two new adverts starring the Gremlin characters.

Ivan Lewis, Minister for Skills and Vocational Education, said: "Millions of adults across the UK do not have the skills of an average 11-year-old. This lack of basic skills affects many areas of their lives - from how much they get paid, to being unable to help their children with homework."

Phil Tufnell is the latest celebrity to lend his support to Get On, which since its launch in August 2001 has been backed by Jamie Oliver, Craig Doyle, Dolly Parton, Alvin Hall, Big Brother 2's Helen Adams, 'Handy' Andy Kane and Tommy Walsh.

The Get On promotional campaign is a key part of the Skills for Life strategy launched in March 2001.

The Government is currently on target to achieve its aim of raising the skills levels of 750,000 adults by 2004.
