Series Of Armed Robberies In Belfast
Police are appealing for information following a number of robberies in the Castlereagh Road area of Belfast.
The incidents happened on Tuesday evening (16 December).
Between 5.45pm and 6.15pm, robberies took place at two shops on the Castlereagh Road as well as on a premises on My Lady's Road. In each incident, a man around 5'7" tall with a swarthy complexion and carrying a knife, threatened staff members. Cigarettes and cash were taken in the robberies. No one was injured.
An attempt to rob a shop on the Woodstock Road by a man matching this description was also reported to police.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
New Appointment To Board Of NI Water
Dr Leonard J. P. O'Hagan CBE has been appointed as the new Chair to the Board of Northern Ireland (NI) Water.
The Board is responsible for the delivery of water and sewerage services in the region. Dr O'Hagan will take up the appointment on 1 April 2015 for four years, until 31 March 2019.
Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy said: "Dr O'Hagan has an excellent track record in business. He has extensive experience at board level, in both the private and public sectors, most recently as Chair of Belfast Harbour Commissioners.
"I am confident that his experience, combined with his strong leadership, communication and negotiation skills will be of great benefit to the company as it continues to provide cost efficient and high quality water and waste water services throughout Northern Ireland."
Thousands Of Cigarettes Seized
Two people have been arrested as part of an investigation into tobacco fraud, it is understood.
The arrests follow the seizure of more than 70,000 cigarettes and three kilograms of hand-rolling tobacco.
On Tuesday (16 December), private and commercial premises were searched in the Ballymoney and Ballymena areas by HM Revenue and Customs officials. During the searches they found 12,020 suspected illegal cigarettes and tobacco as well as almost £2,000 in cash.
In a separate operation on Tuesday, a vehicle was stopped by police in Claudy, C L'Derry. Some 60,000 illicit cigarettes are believed to have been found inside.
A man from south Armagh and a woman from Ballymena were arrested.
They have since been released on bail.
Investigations are ongoing.

A significant haul of nearly five million cigarettes and almost 700kg of tobacco has been seized as part of a major operation by police and customs officers in Northern Ireland. The illicit material, worth an estimated £1.9m in duty and taxes that would have been lost, was uncovered during searches in the Banbridge, Carryduff and Ballyclare areas.

Customs seize 15 million cigarettes at Belfast docks
Customs officers have seized nearly 15 million smuggled cigarettes which were intercepted at Belfast Port. Customs officials said they believed the duty free cigarettes, which were intercepted in a consignment of clay pots from Holland, would have been sold illegally in both Northern Ireland and the Republic.
