Homeless women get boost from EU programme
A special programme aimed at helping homeless women has been launched by the Simon Community, thanks to a grant of nearly £110,000 from the EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation (Peace II).
Delivered through the Training for Women Network (TWN), the initiative, entitled ‘Positive Action for Homeless Women Project’, which is operating over two years, will deliver a training programme to single homeless women focusing on developing self-esteem and self-confidence.
Commenting on the initiative, Paul Collins, Director of Fundraising at the Simon Community, said: “Northern Ireland has experienced a 16% increase in homelessness between 2001 and 2002/2003. Of the people who present to Simon Community Northern Ireland, nearly one quarter are women.
"They usually need help to build their self-esteem before they can even think about appropriate pre-employment training. This project will allow us to help women so that they can move into other employment focused activities."
Over 250 women living in shelters will be assessed for participation on the scheme which will be run in Bangor and Belfast.
The Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB) is one of the six cross border Bodies established under the Good Friday Agreement.
The EU Programme for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties of Ireland is a special programme funded by the European Union and Northern Ireland and Irish Governments to the value of 707 million euro.
The programme’s main aim is to promote peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.
