Locked Doors Prevent Belfast Carjacking
A woman has escaped having her car stolen by two carjackers because her vehicle's doors were internally locked.
Two men attempted to hijack the red Honda Civic as it sat in traffic in the York Road area of north Belfast on Wednesday at about 18:50.
But upon realising the doors had been locked from the inside, the men fled on foot.
The PSNI has appealed to motorists to consider car security at all times, especially over Christmas and New Year.
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Reid said: "We always adopt a rigorous investigative process to any hijacking incident. I am appealing to anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information which may be of assistance to contact Police on the non-emergency number 101. Or, if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111."
The PSNI has re-issued the following advice:
• Keep your doors locked
• Keep your windows up at all times
• Keep all valuables out of sight
• Park in areas or car parks with good lighting
• Do not be distracted by listening to music or talking on your phone as this will distract you from potential threats
• Always be alert and aware of your surroundings when approaching your parked vehicle
• Never leave your keys in the ignition or the engine running in an unattended vehicle and always lock your car
• Report anything suspicious to the police immediately
