Quinn hails Coleraine team as 'heroes'
Coleraine manager Marty Quinn hailed his team as heroes last night after they toppled Portuguese side UD Leiria in their opening UEFA Cup first leg tie.
Quinn watched his side come away from the fixture with an impressive 2-1 victory which leaves them with every chance of progressing through to the next round.
Quinn said: “This was a great night for Irish League football and Coleraine. My players have wonderful spirit and refused to lose their confidence even when Leiria equalised close on half-time.”
Singling out injured skipper Pat McAllister for praise: “He is my captain fantastic. His performance was simply magnificent. His overall play, commitment and willingness are unbelievable. His performance lifted the players around him."
Defender Paul Gaston and striker Rory Hamill delivered the first half goals which gave the Bannsiders a precious victory to take into the return leg tie in two weeks.
For the other Irish League side involved in European action last night it was only disappointment.
Portadown suffered a 4-0 mauling by Swedish side Malmo, leaving them with virtually no chance of progressing through to the next round of the Uefa Cup.
Ronnie McFall's men return to Shamrock Park in a fortnight knowing they will be playing solely for pride.
