Ulster's Chris Henry Undergoes Surgery

Ulster Rugby player Chris Henry has undergone surgery after he was discovered to have suffered a blocked blood vessel in his brain.

The 30-year-old was named as part of the Ireland team due to face South Africa in Dublin on 8 November earlier this month, but hours before the match, he was omitted from the squad.

At the time, it was said the back-rower was taken to hospital with a viral illness. He made a quick recovery and the initial diagnosis was a "severe migraine". However, last week the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU) confirmed the extent of Henry's condition and said the openside flanker had suffered a temporary blockage of a small blood vessel in his brain.

Speaking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland today (25 November), Ulster's manager, Bryn Cunningham, confirmed that Henry had undergone an operation, believed to be exploratory heart surgery.

He said: "We know that Chris went in for an operation yesterday. We're waiting for the medical staff to give us an update on that."

Henry is facing a lengthy period of time off to recover, but both Ulster and Ireland Rugby officials have said they are confident he will be able to resume his rugby career.
