Belfast Taxi Driver Fined

A Belfast taxi driver has been fined a total of £300 at Belfast Magistrates’ Court for four taxi licensing offences.

Mr Damien Patrick Canavan of Laurelbank, Belfast, pleaded guilty and was fined £75 on each of two counts of using an unlicenced taxi and £75 on each of two counts of not having a taxi driver’s licence.

The charges came after Mr Canavan was stopped on 30 March 2014 and 4 April 2014 by Driver & Vehicle Agency Enforcement Officers.

Further checks revealed that the vehicle used by Mr Canavan was an unlicensed taxi and that he did not hold a taxi driver’s licence.

Four Arrested Over £150k Cannabis Seizure

Police have arrested four people and seized cannabis plants believed to worth more than £150,000 in Castlewellan, County Down.

The move follows searches at properties in the Circular Road and Corrywood Park areas yesterday, during which two cannabis factories were uncovered.

Three individuals, two 33-year-old males and a 22-year-old woman, were detained in the Circular Road area. A 30-year-old man was arrested in Corrywood Park.

All four remain in custody on Wednesday morning.

Elderly Woman 'Critical' After Traffic Accident

Police have reiterated an appeal for information after an elderly woman was knocked down by a car in east Belfast last week.

The woman remains in a critical condition in hospital following the incident, which involved a red Kia Sportage and occurred at around 16:50 on Friday.

Police have appealed for anyone who was in the Castlehill Road area at the time of the collision or who might have information to contact police at Strandtown on 101.

Christian taxi firm forced to close
Ulster Unionist West Belfast councillor Chris McGimpsey has said he is “absolutely appalled” at the forced closure of the Christian taxi firm, Liberty. The Shankill Road firm, which was run by Pastor Jack McKee, was forced to close over the weekend following attacks on both the business and Pastor McKee’s home last week.

Arson attack on Belfast taxi firm
Police are investigating a possible arson attack at the depot of a Belfast taxi firm. The fire, which was discovered last night, seriously damaged a portable building belonging to Value Cabs at the firm's Glengall Street office. It is understood that investigators are examining video footage from a hidden security camera at the scene.
