Investigation Launched After Bus Strikes Bridge

An investigation has been launched by Translink after one of its buses became stuck under a bridge.

The incident happened in the village of Helen's Bay, Co Down, on Thursday evening.

It is understood the double-decker bus was being used as part of a rail substitution service for the Belfast to Bangor line at the time.

According to reports, seven passengers were on the bus at the time, but no one was injured. The bus was damaged in the incident, but the bridge has been investigated and no damage has been found to the structure.

In a statement, a spokesperson from Translink said: "We can confirm that an incident occurred last night at approximately 9pm in which a double decker Ulsterbus struck a railway bridge at Helen's Bay, north Down.

"There were seven passengers on board at the time of the incident and no one required hospital treatment. The bus was removed from the scene and parked locally overnight.

"This morning, the bus travelled back from Helen's Bay to Belfast. A small quantity of air was removed from the bus tyres to enable it to safely travel under the bridge.

"A full investigation is underway."
