Properties Damaged In East Belfast

A number of homes have been damaged in east Belfast, following a night of disturbances.

It is the third consecutive evening where trouble has broken out in the area.

On Tuesday night, homes in the Short Strand area of the city were targeted; with the windows of two properties being smashed. The incident happened shortly after 6pm.

It is understood the windows were smashed by a group of youths who were throwing stones at the homes.

A woman, said to be in her 70s, lived in one of the properties. She has been treated for shock. It is thought she also received a few cuts and bruises in the incident. On Monday, a teenage boy was taken to hospital after suffering head injuries when disorder broke out near the Albertbridge Road. A police officer also received injuries to his arm. On Sunday evening, another officer was injured after police came under attack from around 60 youths in the Castlereagh Street area.

The attacks have been condemned by Sinn Féin councillor Niall Ó Donnghaile. He said: "This is yet more evidence of the fallout from the ongoing orchestrated attacks taking place in East Belfast. I have visited two women tonight, both next door neighbours, whose homes were attacked.

"We need to see proactive and joined-up political, community and statutory leadership to face these issues but also resources and support for those on the ground who are working to deal with the issues and make the East safer for all.

"I want to repeat that all incidents at the interface in East Belfast should end now and residents there should be left to live in peace."

Chief Inspector David Moore has asked for parents to make sure they know where their children are.
