Youths Attack Police In East Belfast

Police came under attack from a number of youths in Belfast on Sunday night.

In a statement, the PSNI said officers were attacked by around 60 youths in the east of the city.

Bricks, blocks and bottles were thrown at officers, and the windscreen of a police Land Rover was smashed in the incident. A local neighbourhood sergeant sustained a shoulder injury.

It is understood police were called to the Castlereagh Street area shortly before 7pm after receiving reports that a large group of youths had gathered. The officers were then attacked.

Chief Inspector David Moore said: "This behaviour is totally unacceptable and a police investigation has begun to identify youths involved."

Since April, around 60 arrests have been made for interface-related disorder.
