Belfast Council Warning Over Part-Worn Tyres
92% of part-worn tyres used in Northern Ireland fail to meet the required standards, according to a survey released by Belfast City Council.
As part of Tyre Safety Month, Belfast City Council is urging drivers to be cautious when buying used tyres.
One in 10 motorists are now opting for part-worn tyres, but today a spokesperson for Belfast City Council’s Environmental Health team said: "Environmental health officers across Northern Ireland took part in a survey to assess part-worn tyre retailers’ compliance with Motor Vehicle Tyre (Safety) Regulations. What we found was deeply alarming with 92% of the tyres tested failing to meet the required standards.
"More than half (57%) also failed with regards to labelling alone, and 22% failed to meet the required tread depth. These are sobering statistics and during Tyre Safety Month we’re taking the opportunity to remind drivers not to cut corners on costs if it means risking the safety of them and others."
35% were found to have serious faults that would potentially affect the safety of the tyre.
The survey also resulted in two Belfast businesses being prosecuted by Belfast City Council earlier this year. They were each fined £200 for selling tyres that had nails in them.
