Assembly To Elect New Speaker

The Northern Ireland Assembly is to elect a new Speaker at Stormont today.

The move follows the departure of NI Assembly Speaker William Hay, who has been elevated to the House of Lords. The DUP has politician retired from the role for health reasons, it was reported last week.

When Mr Hay was re-elected in 2011, a deal was made with Sinn Féin that one of their MLAs would be elected to serve the post in 2014 for the remainder of the Assembly mandate.

Sinn Féin expects Mitchel McLaughlin to be elected, but the DUP has since tried to get the vote postponed in order that the matter can be discussed during upcoming inter-party talks.

Mr McLaughlin took on the role of Speaker last month in a temporary capacity.
