Storms leave 1,000 homes without electricity

Approximately one thousand homes were still with without electricity today following last night's storms which caused widespread damage across Northern Ireland.

At one point 20,000 homes were affected by power cuts caused by thunderstorms, however NIE repair crews were able to restore power to most customers by early this morning.

The remaining faults are mainly isolated or “one off” losses of supply, concentrated in the Newry, Dungannon areas.

Robin Greer, NIE’s Communications Manager said: “NIE will be doing everything possible to get the remaining customers back on to supply as quickly as possible. Over 150 NIE engineers and field staff are currently at work on the network to repair the remaining faults."

Last night's thunderstorms were some of the worst seen in recent history in Northern Ireland.

A number of homes suffered damage from lightning strikes while torrential rain affected areas of Counties Antrim and Down.

Meanwhile, a pensioner in north Belfast faced a lucky escape following last night's bad weather.

The 78-year-old woman was found in a state of confusion by a neighbour after a lightning strike set fire to the roof of her house. The resulting fire melted pipes and wires inside the woman's Mount Vernon Lane home.

The woman was raced to the Mater Hospital in Belfast but it is understood that she later discharged herself.
