Holy Cross Device 'Intended To Kill'
Police believe a viable explosive device that was recovered following a security alert at the Holy Cross Church on the Crumlin Road in north Belfast was intended to kill officers.
The device was thrown at a police patrol near the church and failed to detonate, before a call was made to parish priest at 00:50.
Eight homes in the area were evacuated while army bomb experts made the device safe.
The Crumlin Road has now re-opened.
North Belfast SDLP MLA Alban Maginness said: "To cause a security alert outside a church, a place of worship and peace is particularly abhorrent.
"Holy Cross Church and its priests have played a vital part in our community.
"It is terribly distressing for residents in the area who have had to be evacuated from their homes on a terrible night. I would urge anyone with any information to contact the police."
