Police attacker appears in court

The man who left a female police officer in a critical condition in hospital after beating her about the head with an iron bar has appeared in court today charged with attempted murder.

Ray Smullen, 31, from Co Kildare in the Republic of Ireland, appeared before Lisburn Magistrates Court faced with a total of seven charges following last Monday's attack inside Lisburn Police Station.

Mr Smullen told police he had been at a party in Carrickfergus and that the resulting concoction of no sleep for 48 hours and a large quantity of alcohol and drugs had left him in a state of paranoia by the time he reached the police station.

Two other officers were hurt as they tried to intervene in the attack in the early hours of Monday morning.

The 54-year-old female officer who was left severely injured following the assault has since regained consciousness.

Mr Smullen was remanded in custody to appear in court again on 22 September.
