PRONI Releases '83/'84 Records

Previously secret records relating to Northern Ireland history and politics in 1983 and 1984 are now available online.

Over 200 documents have been added to the Conflict Archive on the INternet (CAIN) website as part of ongoing work between the University of Ulster and the Public Record Office (PRONI).

The material deals with the years 1983 and 1984 and covers the 1983 Maze escape, political developments relating to the electoral rise of Sinn Fein, the work of NI Assembly, Anglo-Irish relations, killings at Darkley in November 1983 and allegations about 'Shoot to Kill' policies in 1982.

Staff from the University of Ulster and PRONI collaborated to make the records freely available on the University of Ulster’s CAIN (Conflict Archive on the INternet) Website.

Culture Minister Cara Ní Chuilín said: "This additional material covers a wide range of records relating to 1983 and 1984. These documents provide valuable online research material for students, citizens and researchers alike on what was a really critical period in our history.

"It is important that technology and partnerships are utilised in this way so that some of the Public Record Office's key documents can be analysed online anywhere in the world. I am committed to providing full disclosure through greater access to public records in the future as this can only help to enhance our understanding of the past."

Dr Brendan Lynn, CAIN Deputy Director, added: "We are pleased to have been able to continue our cooperation with PRONI and to update the existing section with material dealing with the year 1983 and 1984.

"The information is easily available and free of charge. We believe it will of great use to students, researchers, teachers and lecturers or to anyone with an interest in the political and social history of Northern Ireland."
