Ligoniel Memorial Attacked

A frequently-targeted memorial to three Scottish soldiers who were killed by the IRA in north Belfast has again been attacked with paint.

The Ligoniel memorial to the soldiers, who were murdered in March 1971, was paintbombed in June and July. This latest attack is the second in a week and thought to be the fifteenth time it has been vandalised in total.

On this occasion, 'IRA' was daubed on the memorial in green paint.

The incident was reported to police at 15:50 on Sunday.

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness said: "The sustained attack on this memorial over a number of months is absolutely unacceptable. I understand that memorials can be a sensitive issue but there is no political end to be served by attacking or desecrating a monument which means something to those who lost loved ones during our violent past.

"We need to get on with the business of healing our divided society. Heartless attacks like this only make that more difficult by reopening old wounds. I would call on those responsible to show compassion for grieving families and end this senseless campaign."
