St George's Market Scoops Prestigious Award

St George's Market has been named the UK's Best Heritage Project in the National Lottery Awards.

St George's Market is one of Belfast's oldest visitor attractions dating back to the 1890s and was renovated and restored thanks to a National Lottery grant of more than £2m from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Since reopening its elegant Victorian doorways in 1999, St George's Market has trebled its trading days – operating every Friday, Saturday and Sunday – and welcomes more than 600,000 visitors each year.

It is home to more than 170 traders, some of whom have been there for several generations, as well as six shop units and a restaurant. It also sustains 385 jobs and generates an estimated £15m per annum for the Belfast economy.

Earlier this year, it was named 'Best Indoor Market' in the National Association of British Market Authorities Awards, and also was a finalist in the BBC Good Food Awards.
