'IRA attacked me' claims dissident republican

A 32-year-old man has claimed he was attacked by the IRA last night because of his political views.

The man, who suffered a gun-shot wound to the right leg, said he was shot because he was a dissident republican.

The man also claimed he had a gun held to his head during the incident but was able to knock it from the hand of his attacker.

He is believed to have been approached from behind by several masked as he walked home from work on the Oldpark Road on Thursday evening.

He was treated in hospital shortly after the incident.

Elsewhere, police in Co Down has uncovered a gun and several rounds of ammunition.

The discovery was made following a tip-off to police during a search the Hunters Hill area of Guilford.

Man Shot In County Down
A 28-year-old man has been shot in the leg in a gun attack in County Down. The man was getting out of his car at the Quays in Killyleagh at about 1.00am on Wednesday morning when a man approached him and shot him. The man is recovering in hospital where his injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

L'Derry Man In Court Over Cocaine Charge
A L’Derry man has appeared in court over charges of conspiracy to supply £240,000 of cocaine. The man has been named as 44-year-old James Harkin. He was arrested in Northern Ireland. The accused was arrested after drugs were found in a car in London. Policed believed the cocaine was destined for Northern Ireland.

Man Dies In Co L'Derry House Fire
A man aged in his 50s has died in a house fire in Magherafelt, Co L'Derry An investigation has been launched into the cause of the fire at a house on Highfield Road, however police said that they don't believe the fire was suspicious. The man's identity has not yet been released.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.
