Police Vehicle Rammed And Officers Injured, Newry

A 27-year-old man has been arrested following a series of road incidents and a suspected assault on police officers.

The arrest follows a number of incidents in the Newry area on Sunday 20 July.

Police on patrol in the Ferryhill Road area noticed a silver BMW performing 'donuts' in the middle of the road at about 19:30 and indicated for the vehicle to stop. But the driver drove towards the police vehicle at speed and rammed the car as he did so.

Then, at around 22:10 the silver BMW was spotted by another police patrol in the Kelly's Road area. This time the car reversed at high speed at an officer, causing her to jump clear to avoid being struck.

The BMW was then detected at around 22:30 at the back of an address at Kelly's Road. The man was detained after he confronted police and attempted to assault officers at the same location.

The BMW has now been seized for examination.

Three officers, two male and one female, have been taken to hospital for treatment for head and leg injuries following the first collision with the police vehicle. The officer involved in the second incident also reported minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
