SF Calls For NI Irish Passport Office
West Tyrone Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has called on the new Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Charlie Flanagan to open an Irish passport office in Northern Ireland.
Mr McElduff said: "My office in Omagh has been inundated with calls in recent weeks from people looking for assistance with Irish passport applications.
"As well as people making new applications, I have been dealing with a number of people who have been seeking replacements for lost or out-of-date passports.
"I know of one man who had to travel all the way to Cork to collect his passport. The staff at the passport office work very hard and are always accommodating but they are under a lot of pressure, particularly at this time of year."
Mr McElduff said he would be writing to the new Minister for Foreign Affairs to call for an Irish passport office to be opened in Northern Ireland.
"There are passport offices in Dublin and Cork and another office in Belfast or Derry or Omagh would be of great assistance to applicants from all over the north of Ireland," he said.
