SF Election Posters Removed From Bonfire
Election posters featuring Sinn Féin's Brenda Chivers and Rory Donaghy have been removed from an unlit bonfire in Limavady, County L'Derry.
The bonfire at Anderson Park, near Edenmore Road, has been constructed in anticipation of the 'Eleventh Night' bonfires that occur across Northern Ireland.
But now the posters have been removed following a complaint to the police.
Sinn Féin Councillor Brenda Chivers said: "These election posters should never have appeared on the bonfire in the first place. We hear of the 12th of July being about cultural expression however putting posters and sectarian slogans on bonfires only incites hatred.
"A proactive approach by the PSNI and council officials has seen the removal of these posters and that is to be welcomed. I would now urge a similar approach across the north of Ireland to other bonfires displaying such images in order that this practice is stamped out."
