Somme Memorial At Belfast City Hall

Belfast Lord Mayor Nichola Mallon joined First Minister Peter Robinson at Belfast City Hall Cenotaph today to commemorate the 98th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

Representatives of the armed forces, ex-services associations and Church leaders took part in the ceremony to mark the date when men from the 36th (Ulster) Division and 16th (Irish) Division lost their lives.

The Somme battle was one of the largest to occur during the First World War, with some 1,000,000 men having been wounded or killed in action.

Other wreath layers in attendance today included First Minister Peter Robinson, Irish Minister Joe Costello TD, Lord Lieutenant Dame Mary Peters and Chief Executive of Belfast City Council Suzanne Wylie.
