Co Antrim Farmer Fined Over Polluted Waterway

A Co Antrim farmer has been fined after pleading guilty to polluting a waterway in Randalstown.

Mr Samuel McCracken, of Craigmore Road, Randalstown, was fined £500 and ordered to pay court fees after admitting to making a polluting discharge.

The charge related to an inspection carried out by Water Quality Inspectors on 30 August last year.

The inspectors visited an unnamed tributary of the River Maine at Portglenone Road, Randalstown and observed the waterway to be brown in colour and foul smelling. The source of the polluting discharge was traced to a farm owned by Mr McCracken.

A sample taken at the time of the incident confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway.
