Security Alert In L'Derry

A security alert has been sparked in L'Derry following the discovery of a suspicious object.

The alert at the Eastway/Laburnum area was raised following discovery of the device. A number of residents have been evacuated.

An army bomb disposal team is attending the scene and diversions are in place.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey said: "People, especially the older residents in the area, are extremely worried. There are a number of schools and nurseries in the area and, while there is no information currently about what schools or nurseries are impacted, traffic may become an issue at pick-up time.

"Hopefully, the alert will end shortly. This is the last thing anyone in Derry needs or deserves."
