Boy Killed In Belfast Road Accident

A five-year-old boy has died in a road accident in north Belfast.

It has been reported that the boy was riding his bike in the Rosehead area of Ardoyne on Wednesday morning at about 09:00 when he was struck by a car.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital, but died as a result of his injuries.

Alliance Belfast Councillor Nuala McAllister said: "I was deeply saddened to learn that such a young child had died in this tragic road accident. I would like to send my condolences to his family and friends.

"This will be an extremely difficult time for his family, school and the local community. However, I hope that the support measures put in place by his school will help his classmates deal with his death. One death on the roads is one too many. We must do all that is possible to improve road safety. I would urge all road users to be vigilant of others, especially young children."

SDLP North Belfast MLA Alban Maginness said: "I was shocked and saddened to learn of the death of a young child in the Rosehead area of North Belfast this morning. This is a tragedy that will send shock and hurt throughout the community. I want to offer my sincere sympathy to the family of the young child who will be going through a harrowing time. I have no doubt that the entire community will rally around them at this extremely difficult time.

"The SDLP will meet with Roads Service in the coming days with a view to securing traffic calming measures that will make the area safer for pedestrians, children and road users. It is imperative that Roads Service acts quickly on these requests before another tragedy befalls this close-knit community."
