Ardoyne man appears in court on Real IRA charges
A man has appeared in court charged with membership of dissident republican organisation, the Real IRA.
David White (39) appeared at Belfast Magistrates Court charged with four offences, which included conspiracy to cause an explosion, possession of an explosive substance with intent to endanger life, and making an explosive device.
The charges are related to an incident which occurred in Upper Queen Street in November 2002, where an incendiary device composed of gas cylinders and pipe bombs was discovered in a vehicle left near the motor tax office.
During the incident, police officers shot and apprehended a man in connection with the device, which was later made safe by army bomb disposal experts.
Police alleged that Mr White, who lives in the Ardoyne area, north Belfast, could be connected to a document about the bomb attack, which was found in the home of a man a remanded in custody last Thursday on charges of participating in a Real IRA intelligence gathering operation at the Royal Victoria Hospital.
During questioning from a defence lawyer, police revealed that Mr White's fingerprints had not been found on the document but that they believed there was "very strong evidence" of his involvement.
Mr White made no reply when charged, and was remanded in custody until 5 August.
