Device packed with shrapnel defused on Co Down road
Army bomb disposal experts have defused an explosive device that was left beside a busy County Down road.
The device was discovered at the side of the main Gilford to Banbridge Road on Sunday. A number of nearby homes were evacuated as army technical experts dealt with the device, which police described as packed with shrapnel and capable of causing serious damage to passing vehicles.
Chief Inspector Stephen Daly added: "This road is particularly busy at the weekend and this device posed a very real threat to the lives of any men, women or children passing by."
Earlier on Sunday, a bomb alert in Londonderry caused the Foyle Bridge to be closed for a time as officers dealt with a suspicious vehicle which had been left at Madam's Bank Road. The alert was later declared a hoax.

Viable Incendiary Device Found On Police Station Grounds
A controlled explosion has been carried out on a viable incendiary device discovered on the grounds of Ballycastle Police Station, Co Antrim. A second device found has been declared a hoax. They were discovered on the Ramoan Road on Thursday morning. A number of businesses were forced to close during the alert, however they have now reopened.

West Belfast security alert ends
A security alert in west Belfast has ended. Police have described the device, which was discovered in the Grosvenor Road area of the city as “viable.” A number of items have since been taken from the scene for forensic examination.
