Liver Health Campaign Launches In NI
A UK wide campaign promoting liver health has come to Northern Ireland, supported by the Royal Victoria Hospital's Liver Support Group.
The British Liver Trust’s 'Love Your Liver' campaign was launched today with a stand at Castle Court Shopping Centre.
Welcoming the campaign, Health Minister Edwin Poots said: "I am delighted to welcome the British Liver Trust’s Love Your Liver Campaign to Northern Ireland and to meet with their staff, RVH consultants and the RVH Liver Support Group volunteers.
"It is great to see many of our own citizens participating in sensitively conducted interviews about their lifestyles which will allow staff to ascertain if there is a potential for liver damage."
According to Northern Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer Dr Michael McBride around 185 people die each year from Chronic Liver Disease, adding that there is an onus on everyone to look after their health and help decrease these unacceptable statistics.
"Small steps like reducing alcohol intake, stopping smoking, changing our diets and a little exercise will not only help improve a person’s overall health but may also help reduce the risk of developing liver disease," Dr McBride said.
Adding: "Initiatives such as the Love Your Liver campaign can ensure that people are provided with information, advice and support that will help them understand the importance of optimising their health and well-being and taking the steps to a healthier lifestyle."
