O'Dowd Praises Creative Writers At Magnet Centre

Education Minister John O'Dowd has praised sixteen young writers from the Magnet Centre in Newry, County Down, who have published an anthology of short stories and poems.

The Magnet Centre is a youth organisation managed entirely by young people. It has been in operation for 21 years and caters for people aged 15-25, six days a week.

Speaking at the launch of the anthology, Minister O'Dowd said: "Today is a special day and a cause for celebration. As published authors you should be proud of what you have achieved in producing this wonderful and poignant anthology. Through this collection of short stories and poems you have shown a flair for creative writing – a valuable skill and a huge personal achievement.

"Here at the Magnet Young Adult Centre, and in other similar centres across the north, young people find a safe and welcoming environment where they can meet and develop their skills and experience through structured activities. Congratulations to all for creating such an interesting piece of work which will no doubt impact positively on the lives of many young people."
