Belfast Council Scoops Recycling Award
Belfast City Council has won a waste management award for its kerbside box recycling scheme.
The scheme was named Best Local Authority Recycling Initiative at the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management 2014.
The council’s recycling box initiative is collected by Bryson Recycling and serves 55,000 households in Belfast. It was phased into operation between August and November last year.
The awards were held in London last week and organised by letsrecycle.com.
Steve Eminton, editor of letsrecycle.com, said: "The standard of entries this year – our 11th Awards for Excellence celebration – was undoubtedly the highest we’ve ever seen. We sincerely congratulate every organisation and individual who was acknowledged as a 2014 finalists, because this an incredible achievement in itself. The judges had a very difficult task selecting the winners."
Tim Walker, Head of Waste Management at Belfast City Council, said: "We’re delighted to have won this award and to have the council’s recycling efforts recognised. To date, this scheme has added 2.5% to our recycling rate which has now risen to around 40%. This is a fantastic achievement and has only been made possible with the help of residents."

About 55,000 homes in Belfast are to benefit from a new recycling scheme that will seek to maximise the amount of waste households can recycle. The changes will be rolled out between August and November and will affect inner-city homes currently on a black recycling box collection, as well as apartments with communal recycling facilities.

Council adds 5,000 homes to paper recycling scheme
The next phase of Belfast City Council’s paper recycling scheme is currently being rolled out in the west of the city. Some 5,000 residents of the Turf Lodge and Suffolk areas, as well as sections of the Glen Road and Upper Springfield Road, will soon receive a blue wheelie bin for paper recycling.

NI Council Secures Almost £186K For Household Recycling Centres
Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has secured £186,200 funding for household recycling centres in the district. The investment, funded by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA), will mean an additional 365 tonnes can be recycled each year.
