Jobseekers Risk Sanctions For Refusing Zero-Hour Contracts

Jobseekers will have to take certain zero-hours contracts or risk losing their benefits.

Previously it had been announced that people in receipt of jobseekers allowance could turn down offers of zero-hours contract without risking their entitlement to benefits.

However, it has now been found that with the change to the new universal credit system, jobseekers could face sanctions if they refuse the casual contracts without good reason.

Zero-hour contracts allow companies to employ people without actually allocating them any hours, and give no guarantee of work.

The change is refusing to accept a zero-hour contract was outlined in a letter by Employment Minister Esther McVey to labour MP Sheila Gilmore, which was reported by the Guardian.
