Hundreds Protest Against Animal Cruelty

A public rally has been held in Belfast city centre to protest against animal cruelty.

The event, which took place on Sunday afternoon, saw hundreds of people attend. Many even brought their dogs and pets along.

The rally is understood to have been organised through social media networks after a number of people were dismayed with the lenient sentences recently handed out in animal abuse court cases. Those in attendance called for more to be done to safeguard animal rights.

Stephen Philpott, from the USPCA, is quoted by the BBC as saying: "The legislation we have is some of the best possible, but unfortunately it's not being implemented properly.

"The sad thing from the USPCA's point of view is that we campaigned for this legislation - there are now three agencies responsible for animal welfare in Northern Ireland, so the USPCA's workload should have been a lot less, but our phones have got busier."

He added that politicians and local authorities should be working to make animal rights a priority in Northern Ireland.
