More Than 23,000 Apply For Free Pre-School Places

The Department of Education has said that more than 23,000 applications had been received for free pre-school places.

The number is a rise of 2% on last year figures.

Education Minister John O'Dowd said more than 21,000 children have now been given one of the places.

Over 95% of children whose parents applied for a place will have secured a place in one of their preferred settings at the end of this stage, according to Mr O'Dowd.

The parents of children unplaced after their initial allocation will be asked to present new preferences in a second stage of the application process which will be issued to parents on Friday 30 May.

They will have to choose from a list of places still available.
