Women Urged To 'Stay In Football'

A new initiative is being launched by the Irish Football Association (IFA) to encourage women to stay involved in football.

The IFA will launch its Women and Girls Football Plan this Friday in the Culloden Hotel in Belfast.

The aim of the project is to "develop, foster and promote girls' and women's football" in Northern Ireland.

Sports Minister Carál Ní Chulín has met with IFA officials to discuss the initiative. She said: "This plan provides an excellent opportunity to develop football for women and girls all over the north. It hopes to build a culture of lifelong participation in football and also to reach beyond the game in terms of health, education and social development.

"This plan also underpins my Department's key message of Promoting Equality and Tackling poverty and Social Exclusion by giving targeted groups opportunities to try football and hopefully continue playing throughout the lives."

Michael Boyd, IFA Director of Football said: "We look forward to working with DCAL, Sport NI and other partners to create a brighter future for the women's game."
