Elderly woman fights off burglars

Police are appealing for information after an attempted robbery at the home of two elderly women in east Belfast.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm last night when two intruders entered a house in Westcott Street occupied by a 70-year-old woman and her 99-year-old mother.

The two men where confronted by the daughter who eventually forced them from her home empty-handed.

One of the men is described as being in his late teens, of stocky build, around 5'8 in height, wearing a light blue shirt.

The other man is around 5'4, with dark thinning hair, moustache, wearing a light coloured top.

Police at Strandtown have asked for anyone who may have saw anything suspicious in the alleyway to the rear of Westcott Street to contact them on 028 9065 0222 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

DOE Launches Seatbelt TV Campaign
A new DOE road safety advert to encourage more seatbelt wearing is to air tomorrow night on UTV. The move follows news that seven people were killed and thirty six were seriously injured last year as a result of not wearing a seatbelt.

Seat belt wearing rate in NI increases
A major survey commissioned by the Department Of the Environment has revealed that the overall seat belt wearing rate for car occupants has increased since April 2005.

Number of people wearing seatbelts increases
The number of people wearing seat belts in Northern Ireland has increased over the past year, figures have revealed. According to the yearly survey commissioned by the DoE, 91% of drivers and 90% of passengers were recorded as wearing a seat belt for the year April 2003-04, an increase of 1%.

Gang Attack Man During Burglary In South Belfast
A gang of three men have attacked another man during an armed burglary in south Belfast. The incident happened in the Diamond Gardens area at around 8.10pm on Tuesday. The men, one armed with a small knife, took the keys of a black Audi A6, and made off in the car in the direction of Finaghy Road North.
