Belfast Health Trust CEO Resigns

The Chief Executive of the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust has resigned.

Colm Donaghy has announced he will step down from his post after nearly four years in the job.

Mr Donaghy has been an employee of the health service in Northern Ireland for 22 years, but is now set to take up a new position as Chief Executive of the Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Having previously served as CEO of both the Southern and Northern Trusts, he was appointed to the Belfast Trust role in 2010.

But recently the Trust has come under pressure as a result of a number of incidents at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast, including an unprecedented backlog within the emergency department in January that saw some patients waiting for 12 hours on trolleys to be seen.

In February, 'escalation measures' were put in place to bring in extra staff and tackle the pressure placed on emergency department workers at the Royal.

Mr Donaghy said: "Health and Social Care is undergoing tremendous transformational change and Belfast Trust is at the heart of that. The opportunity for Belfast Trust in the future to deliver even better and more innovative services to the people of Belfast and to the regional population is unbounded."

Health Minister Edwin Poots said of Mr Donaghy: "As Chief Executive of the Belfast Trust since 2010, he has demonstrated courageous leadership - as well as energy and resilience in undertaking one of the most challenging roles in Health and Social Care.

"He leaves Northern Ireland with my gratitude and best wishes for the future."
