Belfast's 'Fairtrade' Status Renewed

Belfast's status as a 'Fairtrade City' has been renewed for a further two years.

The 'Fairtrade' label is handed out by the Fairtrade Foundation to cities, towns and villages that meet all of five criteria.

Each area must be able to demonstrate that the local council has passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade has and agreed to serve Fairtrade products.

At least four Fairtrade product ranges must be readily available in the area’s retail outlets (shops, supermarkets, newsagents and petrol stations) and two products served in local catering outlets (cafés, restaurants, pubs).

Local workplaces and community organisations must support Fairtrade and use Fairtrade products whenever possible, with a flagship employer required for populations over 100,000.

There must also be evidence of media coverage and events to raise awareness and understanding of Fairtrade across the community.

A local Fairtrade steering group is required to ensure the campaign continues to develop and gain new support.

Lord Mayor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was today presented with a certificate confirming the renewal of Belfast's status by two Fairtrade producers – Alex Flores from El Salvador and Alfredo Ortega from Belize – on behalf of the Fairtrade Foundation.

The two producers were visiting Belfast as part of a series of events to mark Fairtrade Fortnight, which continues until this weekend.

Belfast first achieved Fairtrade City status in 2005. It is the only city to hold dual accreditation, from both the UK-based Fairtrade Foundation and Fairtrade Ireland.
