£5m Peace II funding awarded to NI workspace projects
The European Peace II Programme has announced £5 million of funding for some of Northern Ireland's most deprived and disadvantaged areas.
The funding, which will help projects in Belfast, Londonderry, Ballymena, Toomebridge, Kilkeel, Crossmaglen, Castlederg, Strabane, Portadown and Craigavon, aims to address economic deprivation in areas which have suffered during Northern Ireland's 'Troubles'.
Announcing the funding, Enterprise Minister, Ian Pearson said: “It is widely recognised that the workplace provides an ideal environment in which to bring together people from different community backgrounds and by doing so many of the barriers to reconciliation can be overcome.
“The economic transition of Northern Ireland to a more stable, peaceful and prosperous society needs to be supported through development of the local economic infrastructure. This can be progressed through development of projects such as the 13 receiving funding today."
It is hoped that the new projects being funded by the Peace II Programme will create around 600 jobs. The new funding package will help go towards variety of different sizes of workspace projects ranging from 3,500 square feet to over 40,000 square feet.
The main strategic objective of these projects is to improve the economic infrastructure thereby developing an enterprise culture and encouraging entrepreneurial activity.
