£5m Fund For Community Projects Scoops Top Honour At LGA Awards
A fund which offers £5m of financial support to valuable community projects has scooped a top honour at the 2013 Local Government Awards (LGA).
Belfast City Council's Local Investment Fund was named Best Initiative by Councillors at Thursday's ceremony, organised by the Northern Ireland Local Government Association (NILGA).
Under the scheme, which is part of the council's £150m Investment Programme for the city, representatives bring forward projects on behalf of their communities, with awards ranging from £15,000 to £250,000.
Lord Mayor of Belfast, Councillor Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, welcomed the award.
He said: "This recognises the efforts of Councillors from all parties in directing investment where it is needed most within their areas.
"The Local Investment Fund has supported everything from community gardens and training services for young people to extra sports developments and essential upgrades to community buildings.
"The role of community groups and the work they deliver is invaluable, and this fund is one of the practical ways we can support the contribution they make."
Almost £2.8m has been allocated to 40 groups so far through the fund. The latest projects to benefit include a new 3G pitch in west Belfast, improvements to the Spectrum Centre in Shankill and enhancements to community premises in both the north and south of the city.
