Belfast Mayor 'Feared For His Safety'

Belfast's Lord Mayor has told to a court that the attack during the Woodvale Park reopening on 6 August last year, put "his life in danger".

Sinn Féin's Máirtín Ó Muilleoir was giving evidence to a trial of three people accused of disorderly behaviour during the re-opening of the park, when he "feared for his safety in a loyalist protest".

Maureen Simpson, Samuel Brown Lendrum and Paul Aaron Mateer deny the charges.

Mr Ó Muilleoir also said that some of the protesters held placards and banners and that he was called a "terrorist" and told "you're not welcome at Woodvale".

He added that he then spent 20 minutes in a shed before police were able to get him out of the park safely and to his car.

He said the incident was "vile, violent and vitriolic abuse".

According to lord Mayor, unionist representatives were to have been with him at the even to symbolise peace-building in the area.
