Police Cars Attacked
Police attending the scene of a sudden death in Strabane, Co Tyrone, were attacked by young people throwing stones at the Ballycolman estate on Monday evening.
On the Strabane PSNI Facebook page police wrote: "These young people were aware of the issue dealt with but refused to desist from their behaviour."
SDLP Councillor Patsy Kelly has said that the attack on police vehicles is disgraceful and has made a difficult situation more traumatic for the family involved.
Cllr Kelly said: "I firstly want to express my condolences to those who are grieving at the loss of a close family member. This is a difficult time and has not been made easier by what happened yesterday evening. “This was a senseless attack on police officers while they try to deal with a very difficult and emotional situation while supporting a family in grief. Those responsible have only added to the trauma of the family involved and should be ashamed of themselves. I understand that police had initially chosen to use standard cars while reaching the scene in the Ballycolman estate in an attempt to show sensitivity. Upon coming under attack from youths throwing stones, the cars had to withdraw to be replaced by more dominating landrovers. As police try to use landrovers sparingly, this kind of pointless activity makes it more difficult and will be condemned by everyone in this caring community."
