2014 'Landmark' Year For NI Economy
Northern Ireland's Minister for Enterprise, Tourism and Investment has said 2014 could be a "landmark" year for Northern Ireland, with independent forecasters predicting economic growth.
The latest edition of the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Investment (DETI) Economic Commentary was published today.
Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster commented: "While a range of business surveys have posted positive results since the second half of 2013, it has been officially confirmed that all major sectors expanded in the third quarter of 2013.
"While I am aware that we are only in the early phase of our economic recovery; recent figures including the increase in house and car sales provide real confidence that a bottoming out has occurred and we are beginning our upwards journey."
The Department said its most "conservative independent forecaster" has predicted local economic growth of 1.6% this year.
"After a prolonged period of economic gloom, the start of 2014 is presenting a more positive picture," Minister Foster said.
"Improved labour market indicators combined with growth in economic output across all major sectors, is a welcome start for the year ahead. While challenges remain, our economy is in a much better place to take advantage of the opportunities available to it."
