Colombia trial adjourned as evidence rejected

The trial of the three men accused of training FARC guerrillas in Colombia has been adjourned.

Judge Jairo Acosta refused to admit documentary evidence that the defence claim is crucial to the case as he adjourned the trail of the three Irishmen until July 28.

Niall Connolly, Martin McAuley and James Monaghan are charged with training FARC guerrillas inside the FARC-held zone inside Colombia’s borders. All three men have refused to attend the court on the grounds that a fair trial will not be forthcoming under the Colombian judicial system.

The trail was last adjourned in April this year. Since then Colombian authorities have been examining video tapes which were submitted by the defence as an alibi for James Monaghan.

The three men were arrested in August 2001 as they disembarked from a plane from the FARC stronghold.

If convicted that men could be sentenced to up to 20 years in a Colombian prison.
