Tory councillor's suspension branded inadequate
The family of RIR suicide victim Paul Cochrane has hit out at the suspension of a Conservative Party councillor over remarks he made about their son.
The soldier's father, William Cochrane claimed the move by the Conservative Party to suspend Neville Sanders did not go far enough and that he should have been expelled from the party outright.
Mr Sanders' suspension was the result of remarks made about Mr Cochrane's son in which he dismissed the need for an inquiry into his death at Drumaad barracks, Co Armagh two years ago.
Mr Sanders also caused anger throughout Northern Ireland saying he was fed up paying taxes to cover for the "lazy Irish".
Conservative Party spokesman on Northern Ireland, Quentin Davies travelled to the Cochrane's home yesterday to personally apologise to the family for the remarks. He said he supported the decision to suspend Mr Sanders and also promised support for a fresh inquiry into their son's death.
A disciplinary panel is set to meet to consider the future of Mr Sanders' position within the Conservative Party.
