Matt Baggot Announces Retirement
Matt Baggott is to retire from his role as PSNI Chief Constable.
The move follows a year of mounting challenges for Northern Ireland's police force in the shape of dissident republican activity, contentious parades and riotous public disorder at the hands of loyalist 'flag protesters'.
Mr Baggott has led the PSNI since 2009 after succeeding Hugh Orde and has been involved in policing for 37 years.
The Chief Constable's contract will end in September. He said it had been a privilege to lead the PSNI through the changes of the past few years.
"I am deeply proud of the courage and commitment of my colleagues and the enormous progress they have made on behalf of everyone," he said.
"In my remaining months as chief, my priorities will be to ensure the PSNI has the resources to deal effectively with the many challenges ahead and that our very personal, professional and protective service goes from strength to strength."
Justice Minister David Ford paid tribute to Mr Baggot. "We have seen police officers come under attack from terrorists and from street protestors and the Chief Constable has been constant in his support for his officers," he said.
"Despite all of the pressures on police, recent surveys show that public confidence in the police remains at very high levels. This is a credit to Matt Baggott’s leadership and his determination to deliver personal professional policing in local communities.
"I thank him for the work he has done to date for the people of Northern Ireland and look forward to working with him over the coming months."
