74-Year-Old Shot In Chest
A pensioner has been taken to hospital after being shot in the chest by a masked man in Ballycastle, County Antrim.
The 74-year-old man was working in a shed at a property in the Islandboy Road area at about 20:45 on Thursday evening when the attacker approached and shot him.
The victim was taken to hospital for treatment and his condition is described as stable.
Police are treating the incident as attempted murder and have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw anyone in the area of Islandboy Road around the time of the shooting to contact detectives at Coleraine Police Station.
Ulster Unionist North Antrim MLA Robin Swann said: "Like the local community, I was horrified to learn that a masked man shot a 74-year-old man in the chest in the Islandboy Road area outside Ballycastle at approximately 20:45 last night.
"This is a truly shocking incident which one simply doesn’t associate with a quiet town like Ballycastle and I would appeal for anyone who has any information whatsoever to pass that on to the Police immediately in order that the person responsible for this incident is apprehended as soon as possible."
SDLP Ballycastle Councillor Donal Cunningham said: "I was at a meeting when I became aware of the incident, and was shocked to hear what had happened. Where this attack took place is a very quiet, rural isolated area and that is why people are so shocked to hear there has been a shooting.
"No one has the right, or mandate to the take the law into their own hands and to act as judge, jury and executioner. I would urge anyone with information about this attack, which I understand is being treated as attempted murder by police, to contact them immediately."
