NI Unemployment Rate Increases
The Northern Ireland unemployment rate continues to rise, according to figures release today by the Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA).
Unemployment stood at 7.5% for the period August - October 2013, indicating an increase of 0.6% on the previous quarter and a fall of 0.3% on a year ago.
The Northern Ireland unemployment rate for the period remained above the UK average rate of 7.4%, which is down 0.3% over the quarter and 0.5% over the year.
However, Northern Ireland continues to have a lower unemployment rate than the European Union (11%) and the Republic of Ireland (13.6%).
Figures for August - October 2013 show that 47.2% of those unemployed in Northern Ireland have been unemployed for one year or more. This is down 7.3 percentage points from one year ago.
The number of people claiming unemployment related benefits stood at 60,200 in November 2013, indicating a fall of 700 when compared to the previous month.
The Northern Ireland claimant count rate (6.7%) in November 2013 was the highest among the twelve UK regions. The UK rate was 3.8%.
Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster said: "Although the increase in the unemployment rate is disappointing, it is encouraging that the number of unemployment benefit claimants continues to fall.
"The increase in the unemployment rate indicates that the path to full recovery in the Northern Ireland labour market can be uneven at times. However, the more recent fall in unemployment benefit recipients, along with the increase in employee jobs, demonstrates that there is some sustained improvement in the labour market which is to be welcomed."
