Police Checkpoints Stop 2,000 Vehicles

Almost 2,000 vehicles have been stopped at police checkpoints in Belfast following a recent rise in dissident republican activity.

Heightened security followed an incident on Sunday 24 November in which a man was forced into driving a car bomb to the Victoria Square shopping complex in Belfast city centre.

Letter bombs have also been sent to senior police officers, while police patrols have been shot at.

The PSNI said 323 checkpoints have been mounted so far, with 1,784 cars having been stopped between 25 November and 10 December.

Chief Supt Alan McCrum said the checkpoints were "more sporadic" than during the Troubles.

"The checkpoints are much shorter in length but they also have a significant deterrent effect so we achieve a greater balance between public reassurance and protection," he said.

The PSNI said it did not believe the city's commercial potential would be disrupted over the Christmas period.
